• Our adoption process is fairly simple, but we do want to be sure that the animals that we have cared for and loved go to the best homes! We will ask you a few questions to determine the suitability of your home for our dogs or cats. You will complete a one page questionnaire and we will complete an adoption contract. We offer all dogs and cats on a first come, first serve basis as long as the adopter meets our requirements. We do not "hold" animals for anyone, unless you phone us from somewhere at least an hour away to tell us that you are driving to meet a specific animal. If you have your heart set on one of our animals, you may adopt it without meeting it first and we will hold it for you once you pay with a credit card. One of the most important parts of our contract is that we require all animals adopted from us to be returned to us if it doesn't work out for any reason. Before you come to the shelter, here are a list of questions that you can be thinking about:

    • Do you currently have pets?
    • How long will the pet be left alone?
    • Do you want a kitten or puppy, or are you looking for an adult animal?
    • Do you have young children in the house?
    • How will your pet be confined when you are not directly supervising it?
  • What are the adoption requirements?

Owning a pet and giving it the appropriate care is an expensive undertaking. We want our adopters to be aware that there are ongoing preventative care costs that they will experience, such as flea and tick and heartworm prevention. We do not require a fenced in yard, but we do require a humane way of making sure a pet does not simply run at large once adopted. We will not, under any circumstances, adopt to anyone who is planning to chain a dog outside as a permanent means of confinement. We also will not adopt a cat to anyone who plans on declawing it. We reserve the right, for any animal adopted from us, to conduct a home visit.

  • Why is there an adoption fee?

Yancey Humane is a non-profit organization that runs almost completely on fund raising and private donations. When we take in a stray dog, for example, the surgery, vaccines, heartworm test and ongoing prevention costs somewhere around $80. There is also the cost to feed the animals and pay the staff for the daily care giving. Charging an adoption fee helps to off-set that cost somewhat. We do try to keep our fees low enough to make adoption an attractive option for people.

  • What is included in the adoption fee?

Our fee includes the spay or neuter surgery for your new pet along with age appropriate shots and heartworm testing for dogs. It also includes a microchip for all dogs and for cats if requested. We also provide a transition bag of dog or cat food for you to take home to make the change smoother and less stressful to your new animal.

  • To speed up the adoption process, you can download our Questionnaire, complete it and bring it with you when you visit the shelter.

  • Adoption Fees

Our standard fees are as follows:
    Cats $35.00
    Adult Dogs $65.00
    Puppies Under 6 months - $85.00
  • We frequently offer special adoption fees. When we do, those rates will be posted on our website and on our Facebook page.

  • Home for the Holidays Special

During the month of December, we are offering a special adoption rate in an effort to get all our dogs and cats home for the holidays!  The adoption rate for dogs is $25.00 and $5.00 for cats. So make your holidays a little more special by adding a new furry member to your family.
