• Any shelter is only as good as the people who work there. We take pride in the level of care and commitment that our staff demonstrates daily. Their jobs are not just jobs to them. Each of them truly loves the animals in their care, and they do their best to make sure the dog and cats residents are healthy and happy and that their environment is comfortable and clean.

  • Renee Tomberlin

    Shelter Director

I began working at the Humane Society in 2011 as a kennel tech. Under the supervision of the former Director I learned about animal behavior and basic shelter medicine. I am a Certified Rabies Vaccinator and a Certified Euthanasia Technician. I took over as Director in October of 2015 and have been challenged and rewarded while learning how to run the shelter! I have had many different careers in the past from Special Education to Social Services to helping my husband run a business, but nothing speaks to my soul like being here at the shelter. I have so many ideas and initiatives all aimed at helping us become the best shelter we can possibly be. My favorite breed is the German Shepherd Dog but I love all dogs and cats who come through our door! I am the proud mother of four grownup human children and two wonderful dogs, a German Shepherd and a Labrador Retriever.

  • Ember Trimble

    Kennel Manager

As an animal lover it has been my privilege to love a variety of animals through the years. I was raised on a farm and showed goats and horses through 4H. I loved competing and carried that into my adult years where I was fortunate enough to qualify to take my horse to the AQHA World Show in Oklahoma. I was also the owner and handler of Victory Lanes Fashion Icon aka Chanel (In my picture above) who was one of the top 10 Miniature Australian Shepherds in the nation. None of these accomplishments however has given  me more pleasure than working at the Yancey Humane Society. I am truly blessed to be part of such an amazing organization! There is something so special about working amongst fellow animal lovers!

  • Wanda Young

    Office/Volunteer Coordinator

I have a long affection for dogs! I have owned one throughout my life.I am a retired professional educator of 30 years who has managed to carve out a retirement career in something I feel so strongly about- rehoming and rehabilitating dogs. I feel honored and privileged to work at such an outstanding facility with such dedicated and wonderful people. My favorite breed is the German Shepherd Dog and I have been fortunate to have owned four in my lifetime. Their qualities of loyalty, courage and intellect have encouraged me to try to be more like them! Presently I am the proud owner of Rayner, a German Shepherd; Daisy, a spaniel/sheepdog that I trained to be a pet therapy dog through Alliance Therapy Dogs, Inc.; and Sadie, a pit mix. All three were adopted from Yancey Humane Society. My life is full and blessed.

  • Jennifer Moore

I moved to these beautiful mountains from Atlanta, Georgia about two years ago.  I have been fortunate enough to be able to do what I love for a place that I am so passionate about.  I bring twenty years of accounting experience to the shelter.  I am a full charge bookkeeper and I make sure that our wonderful employees get paid and that everything runs smoothly with our financials.  When I am not busy with numbers, you will often find me sitting in the kennels loving on a dog or a cat.  So far, I have adopted my two babies from this amazing shelter.  I am proud to be able to work with these incredible people here at the shelter.
